TIBETAN JWELLERY

Tibetan jewellery is stylish, unique and artistic and usually feature vibrant colors. It is deeply symbolic as a part of its people lives by the strong connection with religious beliefs.

 

Many jewellers have passed down skills & knowledge for centuries. Since the business has been running through the family for generations in some cases. Nowadays most of the craftsmen can be found in the old town area in Kathmandu, Nepal. 

Tibetan people value their jewelley based on its colour, size and symbolic, yet used it to communicate their social status. In Tibet they don't only wear their traditional jewelley in order to beautify themselves but sometimes it serves as amulets as well. 


Besides the most popular kind of jewellery that made from precious metal which are silver and gold, there're ornaments made from other organic material such as ivory and yak bone which used for making prayer beans.

Sadly nowadays, traditional Tibetan jewellery sets are only worn on festival and is very different from what can be found in department stores. 
In modern days, Tibetan jewellery is still made from local materials to remain the significant cultural meaning and its beauty for the wearer. However, expensive materials such as gold and silver were mostly replaced with brass and "Tibetan Silver" which can refer to a combination of metals including silver, an alloy of copper and sometimes a very small mount of tin or nickel. 
Tibetan Jewellery is not just beautiful but it's also functional. It's used for communication in some tripe, hygiene & work aid, and the most of all for protection purposes. There are a range of gemstones used in Tibetan jewellery such as tiger eye, amber. Different stones have different meanings, represent different types of spirit and power but the most popular semi-precious gemstones featured with Tibetan jewellery are turquoise that can be found in the Himalayas and some imported lapis lazuli (Afghanistan) and coral.
TURQUOISE

 

Turquoise is one of the oldest stones used in man’s history, known by the power of protection and healing. It is a stone of strong and opaque, first used by Turkish soldiers before it came to be used for protection against falls of any kind.

 

Turquoise has spanned all cultures for thousands of years as a symbol of wisdom, luck, protection and the power of immortality. 

 

Tibetan turquoise is mostly greener than normal. It is used for clearing blockages of suppressed self-expression especially.

 

CORAL

 

Coral is one of the precious stones used in Tibetan culture. It is known for the use of curing blood related diseases and helping the wearer courageous, yet considered a gem used to challenge against any kind of evil power. It is also a gem of luck for people who having their birth dates 9, 18, 27 on any month.

LAPIS LAZULI

 

Lapis Lazuli is deep, celestial blue, which is the symbol of royalty and honor, spirit and vision, power and gods making it a stone of wisdom and truth.

 

Lapis is known for its power of activating the higher mind and enhancing intellectual ability. People believe that it can help the wearer in process of learning and understanding, as well as enhancing memory, bringing harmony and calmness in relationship.
